To the Woman Who Looked Through the Cracked Window and Thought She Saw a Star I like your optimism, your ability to see through the cracks in the windshield of life. That crack in the window could be a bullet hole, could have resulted in loss of life, but you see the spiraling array as a miracle, a daytime star shining bright against adobe wall. What if a crack like that appeared in my mirror, in my magnifying glass, in my binoculars? I would see myself tattooed with stars, see myself as light. I would see stars dance across my books, my pill bottles, my grocery lists. Everything marked with an asterisk. I could look out into the world with my binoculars, see the starry universe up close, know the starry-eyed deer, the star- struck tops of trees, the star- bright flowers intimately. To the woman who looked through the cracked window and saw a star, You are a star. Laura L. Hansen
